Unit Description:

FLATE, the Florida Advanced Technological Education Center for Manufacturing, has developed a curriculum to prepare students for careers in manufacturing. These Comprehension Instructional Sequence Model (CIS) Lesson Plans are intended to “build learners’ background knowledge in STEM areas, expand their vocabularies, and to promote reading and writing success.” Each model lesson includes materials based around reading, research, industry tours, and reflection through discussion and essay writing.

The entire collection of Comprehension Instructional Sequence Model (CIS) Lesson Plans.

Lesson Description:

This module from FLATE focuses on automation and asks students to consider the future of robots. The lesson objectives are: 1) Discover uses of automation in manufacturing, 2) Identify variations in robotics used in manufacturing, and 3) Analyze the effect automation in manufacturing has on jobs and worker efficiency.

The completion of the lesson in full takes four 50-minute class periods. Resources available as part of this lesson include a Teacher Lesson Plan & Grading Rubric, a Teacher Lesson Guide Presentation, a Lesson Article, a Student Worksheet, and a Company Profile Worksheet.

For orientation purposes, CIS Teacher Lesson MFG Day_Automation.pdf is included as a separate attachment. This document offers a description of the lesson as well as an overview of topics covered and the intended audience.

Lesson Contents:

The Lesson Plan document includes lesson objectives and expectations, relevant Common Core standards, required materials and supplies, a detailed sequence for both teacher presentation and student completion of the lesson, and a grading rubric for the essay that serves as evidence of student achievement.

The PowerPoint presentation covers an introduction to automation in manufacturing, basic vocabulary, directions for student activities and assignments, and class discussion questions.

The 2013 article, titled “Professor Emeritus Rodney Brooks Refines the Sequel to iRobot” covers advances in the development of robots to assist in manufacturing.

The five page Student Worksheet, designed to be used throughout the four day lesson, includes space for students to think critically both before and after reading the article, a page for directed note-taking, and space to compose their reflective essay.

The Company Profile worksheet guides students in finding information online to answer questions about a manufacturing company.
