Unit Description:

FLATE, the Florida Advanced Technological Education Center for Manufacturing, has developed a curriculum to prepare students for careers in manufacturing. These Comprehension Instructional Sequence Model (CIS) Lesson Plans are intended to “build learners’ background knowledge in STEM areas, expand their vocabularies, and to promote reading and writing success.” Each model lesson includes materials based around reading, research, industry tours, and reflection through discussion and essay writing.

This lesson is part of a collection of Comprehension Instructional Sequence Model (CIS) Lesson Plans.

Lesson Description:

This model lesson from FLATE focuses on  focuses on the role of welding in fabrication in the manufacturing industry. In considering this topic, students will: 1) Identify welding processes, 2) Examine various welding techniques used in the manufacturing process, and 3) Analyze the importance of welding in the manufacturing process of products.

The completion of the lesson in full takes four 50-minute class periods. Resources available as part of this lesson include a Teacher Lesson Plan & Grading Rubric, a Teacher Lesson Guide Presentation, a Lesson Article, a Student Worksheet, and a Company Profile Worksheet.

For orientation purposes, viewers should begin with CIS Teacher Lesson MFG Day_Fabrication Welding.pdf, which offers a description of the lesson as well as an overview of topics covered and the intended audience.

Lesson Contents:

The Lesson Plan document includes lesson objectives and expectations, relevant Common Core standards, required materials and supplies, a detailed sequence for both teacher presentation and student completion of the lesson, and a grading rubric for the essay that serves as evidence of student achievement.

The PowerPoint presentation covers an introduction to welding in fabrication, basic vocabulary, directions for student activities and assignments, and class discussion questions.

The article, titled “Manufacturing Processes - Different Fusion Welding Processes” covers the basic principles behind welding and the various types of welding used in manufacturing.

The five page Student Worksheet, designed to be used throughout the four day lesson, includes space for students to think critically both before and after reading the article, a page for directed note-taking, and space to compose their reflective essay.
