Program Description:

The Building Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) Center has developed a 4-semester program to prepare students to work as commercial building energy auditors. The Commercial Building Energy Analysis & Audits Program is divided into 15 modular courses designed for a community college level student. Courses are intended to prepare students for energy auditing, analyzing a building envelope and building systems for efficiency, employing appropriate tools for energy modeling and working with data, describing utility rate structures and demand response strategies, estimating energy savings and financial impacts, and integrating business development skills and concepts with energy audit reporting.

Content modules can be selected, recombined, or offered in a more compressed format for existing workers, or those that have some background in construction, architecture, HVAC, building operations or mechanical engineering.

Course Description:

This model course from BEST Center focuses on lighting Systems and controls. The course asks students to consider fundamentals of lighting systems and controls for energy auditors, concepts of lighting, terminology, measurement tools, energy efficiency opportunities, codes, and standards. In completing the course, students will be able to: 1) Summarize terminology, physics and principles of lighting, 2) Identify and compare various types of lighting systems, including field identification and interpretation of nameplate data, 3) Measure illuminance and lighting intensity, 4) Describe the theory and operations of various lighting control systems 5) Evaluate energy use by various types of lighting systems and identify opportunities for energy efficiency measures, 6) Calculate energy savings of energy efficiency measures and estimate their financial impact, and 7) Apply relevant local, state and national codes, standards and regulations relevant to lighting system recommendations.

The completion of the lesson in full takes 30 lecture hours (including 10 lab hours). Resources available as part of this course include a course outline, 7 PowerPoint presentations, a course outline of record, a course summary table, a reference document for PEC lighting classes, and a document containing quizzes and an exam relating to the course.

For orientation purposes, viewers should begin with ENRG 54_Course Outline.pdf, which offers a description of the course as well as an overview of topics covered through a course outline.

Course Contents:

The 3-page course outline document includes a course description, learning outcomes, and a detailed course topics outline. Topics include: 1) Introduction to fundamentals of lighting, 2) Lighting systems, 3) Lighting controls, 4) Additional EEMs, 5) Lighting measurements, 6) Lighting calculations, 7) Lighting standards, codes, and regulations, and 8) O&M (operations and maintenance) measures to assure optimal performance. Sections detailing the types of in-class and out-of-class assignments required and other textbooks and resources are also included.

The 7 PowerPoint presentations cover the eight topics introduced in the course outline, with the final presentation covering topics 7 and 8.

The Course Outline of Record contains a general description of the course, course specifics, a catalog description, major learning outcomes, contents of the course, instructional methodology, and classification.

The course summary document contains a table breakdown of the course sections, including hours, laboratory or presentation activities, quizzes and exams, and homework. It also contains a scoring rubric for grading.

The PEC Lighting Classes document provides information and course descriptions for related courses on lighting.

The quiz and exam document contains two multiple-choice quizzes, as well as a multiple-choice exam. There is an answer key for all three assessments at the end of the document.
