Program Description:

River Valley Community College, in association with Program Development in Cybersecurity with Focus on Business and Healthcare Concepts, has developed a 4-semester program to prepare students to working the Information Assurance (IA) field with a focus on Cybersecurity and Healthcare IT. Courses are intended to prepare students for assuring confidentiality, integrity and availability of IT systems and networks in healthcare settings, where scheduling, storage of images, filling prescriptions, billing and more are handled and stored using information technology.

Course Description:

This Course from River Valley Community College center focuses on information assurance, and asks students to consider the principles of current threats and vulnerabilities of the cyber landscape, plus other topics relating to the information assurance field. In completing the course, students will be able to: 1) Explain the concepts of information systems security as applied to an IT infrastructure, 2) Describe how malicious attacks, threats, and vulnerabilities impact an IT infrastructure, 3) Explain the role of access controls in implementing a security policy, 4) Explain the role of operations and administration in effective implementation of security policy, 5) Explain the importance of security audits, testing, and monitoring to effective security policy, 6) Describe the principles of risk management, common response techniques, and issues related to recovery of IT systems, 7) Explain how businesses apply cryptography in maintaining information security, 8) Analyze the importance of network principles and architecture to security operations, 9) Explain the means attackers use to compromise systems and networks and defenses used by organizations, and 10) Apply international and domestic information security standards and compliance laws to real‐world implementation in both the private and public sector.

Course Contents:

The 4-page Course Outline document includes a course description, course competencies, course topics outline, learning and instructional methods for the course, and performance evaluation information.

The 7-page syllabus document includes a course introduction and description, information on required materials, learning objectives, overview of course structure and policies, course structure and content in the form of a table, and information on assessment and grading of the course.
