Jobs to Manufacturing Careers: Work-Based Courses

This 9-page report provides an overview of the work-based course model, "Work-Based Learning in Action."  This model introduces community college students to manufacturing jobs through onsite training and education.  Courses are co-taught by both faculty and manufacturing professionals on job sites and prepare students for employment.  The program allows students to work towards a two-year degree and increased job competencies, while also meeting the technical needs of employers.

The model for successful work-based learning, outlined by this report, is defined by seven principles: Supporting entry and advancement in a career track; provision of meaningful tasks that build career skills and knowledge; offering of compensation; identification of target skills and how gains will be validated; rewarding skill development; supporting college entry, persistence, and completion; and provision of comprehensive student supports.
