Supporting English Language Learners in Our Classes

This module, from SAGE 2YC: Supporting and Advancing Geoscience Education at Two-year Colleges through Workshops and Web Resources, offers information on providing academic support to community college students who are "still in the process of acquiring and/or refining their skills in English." The site offers information on who fits within the broad category of English language learners (ELLs), some of the specific linguistic challenges they must overcome, as well as the cultural challenges they face. Strategies for enhancing comprehension and retention of information for ELL students are offered, as well as a short list of sources offering more information. This page would be of use to community college instructors, particularly those of STEM classes, and administrators at community colleges with student populations including international students, immigrants, and first generation students.
