Program Description:
This material was published by the Regional Center for Nuclear Education and Training (RCNET) as part of a comprehensive crosswalk that links objectives of ACAD 08-006 with GP Strategies ABC Material, NUCP Surveyed Material, NANTeL resources, EPRI resources, web resources, and published material available to all RCNET partners. These accredited utility training programs are based off training and qualification guidelines (ACADs) published by the National Academy for Nuclear Training.

ACAD 08-006 is the Uniform Curriculum Guide for Nuclear Power Plant Technician, Maintenance, and Nonlicensed Operations Personnel Associate Degree Programs and includes five main curriculum areas: Core Curriculum, Discipline-Specific Curriculum for Nonlicensed Operators, Discipline-Specific Curriculum for Radiological Protection Technicians, Discipline-Specific for Chemistry Technicians, and Discipline Specific for Maintenance Personnel.

The Radiological Protection Standards section of the Radiological Protection Technicians (ACAD 08-006 3.3.5) covers "[i]dentify[ing] the regulatory and advisory organizations that have cognizance in this area and describe the function of each."

This collection provides information about the role and function of a variety of different organizations that address issues pertaining to radiological protection, including the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC);  the Department of Transportation; the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA);  the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC); the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP); and the National Council on Radiation Protection & Measurements (NCRP).

This section also includes information about performing and documenting Airborne Radioactivity Surveys, which "are used to assess plant engineering control functions." In addition, the collection includes information about the NRC's Agreement State Program, through which the "NRC provides assistance to States expressing interest in establishing programs to assume NRC regulatory authority under the Atomic Energy Act of 1954" and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which "oversees the creation, promulgation, and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector."

In addition, this collection includes fifteen presentations that address a variety of topics relating to radiation and radiological safety and protection. These presentations are: Biological Effects of Radiation at the Cellular Level; Contamination Control, Decontamination, and Respiratory Protection; Continuous Air Monitors (CAMs); External Exposure Control; Internal Exposure Control; Key Parts of 10 CFR for the Nuclear Industry; Personnel Monitoring; Plant Status; Protection Against Radiation; Radiation Protection Postings; Radiation Protection Standards and Guidelines; Radiographic Testing; Radiological Safety & Response; The Regulatory Organizations (which provides information about each of the six organizations mentioned above, as well as the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements); and Transuranic Waste Disposal.

Documents associated with ACAD 08-006 3.3.5 include 9 documents and 15 PowerPoint presentations.

For orientation purposes Theregulatoryandadvisoryorganizations.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this curriculum.

Below is a list of the files contained within the .zip attachment. The size of each file is included in parenthesis.
