RCNET ACAD 08-006 Crosswalk: 3.3.10 Radiological Protection Technicians - Airborne Radioactivity Control

Program Description:
This material was published by the Regional Center for Nuclear Education and Training (RCNET) as part of a comprehensive crosswalk that links objectives of ACAD 08-006 with GP Strategies ABC Material, NUCP Surveyed Material, NANTeL resources, EPRI resources, web resources, and published material available to all RCNET partners. These accredited utility training programs are based off training and qualification guidelines (ACADs) published by the National Academy for Nuclear Training.

ACAD 08-006 is the Uniform Curriculum Guide for Nuclear Power Plant Technician, Maintenance, and Nonlicensed Operations Personnel Associate Degree Programs and includes five main curriculum areas: Core Curriculum, Discipline-Specific Curriculum for Nonlicensed Operators, Discipline-Specific Curriculum for Radiological Protection Technicians, Discipline-Specific for Chemistry Technicians, and Discipline Specific for Maintenance Personnel.

This section of Radiological Protection Technicians (ACAD 08-006 3.3.10) covers the methods to control airborne radioactivity.

Materials associated with ACAD 08-006 3.3.10 three documents and 12 PowerPoint presentations.

The 10-page Performing Airborne Radioactivity Surveys document "provides information which can be used to establish a program for the performance and documentation of airborne radioactivity surveys, which are used to assess plant engineering control functions."

The 42-page Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program document is an "instructor handout [that] provides notes for accompanying PowerPoint presentation, as well as handouts for students."

The 43-page Contamination Control Lesson Plan "provides guidance for an entire lesson with references to the ACADs addressed, texts and resources and PowerPoint presentation, along with instructor slides notes and scenario problems for students to answer as assessment of learning."

The 18 PowerPoint presentations cover topics such as air sampling, contamination control, radiological controls, protection against radiation, internal exposure control, radiological safety and response, and more.

This material covers, more specifically: identifying the isotopes of primary concern for airborne radioactivity at the plant; the procedures for posting areas as airborne radioactivity areas; the characteristic difference between particulate, iodine, tritium, and noble gases and how they affect the method of detecting and controlling airborne radioactivity; collecting airborne samples, and describing plant procedures for collecting routine airborne radioactivity samples, including the frequency of surveys, types of surveys performed, instruments to be used, areas to be samples, sampling techniques, and documentation of results; the procedure for determining the derived air concentration; the purpose of using a continuous air monitor; trends in airborne radioactivity based on sampling results; and more.

For orientation purposes the ContaminationControlLessonPlan.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this curriculum.

Below is a list of the files contained within the .zip attachment. The size of each file is included in parenthesis.
