RCNET ACAD 08-006 Crosswalk: 3.3.14 Radiological Protection Technicians - Radioactive Material Control

Program Description:
This material was published by the Regional Center for Nuclear Education and Training (RCNET) as part of a comprehensive crosswalk that links objectives of ACAD 08-006 with GP Strategies ABC Material, NUCP Surveyed Material, NANTeL resources, EPRI resources, web resources, and published material available to all RCNET partners. These accredited utility training programs are based off training and qualification guidelines (ACADs) published by the National Academy for Nuclear Training.

ACAD 08-006 is the Uniform Curriculum Guide for Nuclear Power Plant Technician, Maintenance, and Nonlicensed Operations Personnel Associate Degree Programs and includes five main curriculum areas: Core Curriculum, Discipline-Specific Curriculum for Nonlicensed Operators, Discipline-Specific Curriculum for Radiological Protection Technicians, Discipline-Specific for Chemistry Technicians, and Discipline Specific for Maintenance Personnel.

This section of Radiological Protection Technicians (ACAD 08-006 3.3.14) covers the concepts related to radioactive material control.

Materials associated with ACAD 08-006 3.3.14 include three documents and nine PowerPoint presentations.

The 10-page Performing Airborne Radioactivity Surveys document "provides information which can be used to establish a program for the performance and documentation of airborne radioactivity surveys, which are used to assess plant engineering control functions."

The 47-page Radioactive Materials Handling and Accountability document "provides references to materials, instructor notes and a link to an PowerPoint presentation designed to teach a lesson on radioactive materials handling and accountability."

The 42-page Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program document is an "instructor handout [that] provides notes for accompanying PowerPoint presentation, as well as handouts for students.

The nine PowerPoint presentations cover topics such as air sampling, gaseous radwaste, protection against radiation, radiological safety, and more.

This material covers, more specifically: identifying the packaging, marking, and labeling requirements for radioactive materials stored on site; identifying NRC-licensed radioactive materials that require special controls; the approval and posting requirements for radioactive material areas and radioactive material storage areas; plant procedures for storing and retrieving radioactive materials; special precautions and restrictions for storing radioactive materials outdoors; plant procedures for preventing the loss of radioactive materials; radiation monitors used to detect and measure releases; and much more.

For orientation purposes Radiological_Environmental_Monitoring_Program.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this curriculum.

Below is a list of the files contained within the .zip attachment. The size of each file is included in parenthesis.
