This 24-page resource, developed by the National Center for Optics and Photonics Education (OP-TEC), is one of four modules that cover photonics and manufacturing. This module covers "the use of lasers for testing and measurement in an industrial environment." This module "emphasizes the use of interferometric and holographic principles for measurement and for nondestructive testing, as well as defect detection." Specific topics discussed in the module include the following: interferometric principles, real-time holographic interferometry, double-exposure holographic interferometry, time-average holographic interferometry, and more. Four exercise questions and a laboratory are included in the module. The lab involves "obtain[ing] a profile of the deformation of a thin metal diaphragm under pressure loading and detect[ing] potentially defective areas on the diaphragm." Three other photonics and manufacturing modules are available to view separately.
