Introduction to Statistical Process Control Learning Module
Module Description:
This learning module, from Support Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), serves as an introduction to statistical process control (SPC). "SPC is a set of tools used for continuous improvement and the assurance of quality in an active manufacturing process. This learning module introduces some of the SPC tools used by technicians and engineers, including one of the most common tools - control charts."
Module Contents:
This module includes five instructor guides, five participant guides, and two presentations. All resources include .pdf and .docx versions. The included instructor and participant guides are Statistical Process Control Activity Resistance Measurement, Statistical Process Control Assessment, Statistical Process Control Knowledge Probe (KP) Pre-test, Introduction to Statistical Control Primary Knowledge Unit, and Control Chart Basics Primary Knowledge Unit. Instructor guides include additional content such as instructor notes and questions and answers. A Learning Module Map (LM) Instructor Guide is also included.
The LM map provides information about the module including contents, target audience, and a map that is divided into the following sections: Important Steps, Key Points, and Reasons.
The Resistance Measurement activity includes an activity description, objectives, an introduction, documentation directions, and more. "The purpose of this activity is to apply your knowledge of SPC to determine whether or not your process is operating as it should." Activity objectives include:
- Use historical data to construct a control chart.
- Measure resistance values of process samples and plot the resistance values on your control chart.
- Using the Shewhart Rules (Western Electric Rules), determine if your process is in control.
The Knowledge Probe Pre-test includes 15 questions and assesses students' knowledge of SPC and how it relates to MEMS fabrication before completing the module.
The Statistical Process Control Primary Knowledge Unit provides an overview of SPC. The main learning objective is "to explain process variation and the need to identify special cause variation." The following sections are included in this unit guide: Description and Estimated Time to Complete, Learning Module Objective(s) / Outcomes, Terminology, Introduction - Why is Statistical Process Control Important, The Data for Statistical Process Control, and more.
The Control Chart Basics Primary Knowledge Unit provides an overview of control charts. Unit and related activity objectives include:
- Explain normal distribution and how it relates to x bar control charts.
- Given a set of data, construct an x bar control chart.
- Interpret control charts by applying the Shewhart rules to identify processes that are Out of Control (OOC).
The following sections are included in this unit guide: Description and Estimated Time to Complete, Terminology, Introduction to Control Charts, Characteristics of Control Charts, Shewhart Rules (Western Electric Rules), and more.
This module also includes two PowerPoint presentations. These presentations include information on statistical process control for technicians and control chart basics.
The final assessment includes 12 questions that assess the student's knowledge of SPC and how it relates to MEMS fabrication.
For orientation purposes SPC_P1_LM_Map_IG.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this module.
