Description:
This course, made available by Massachusetts Bay Community College, is the first of two project-based courses that provide students with "multidisciplinary instructions, where students can learn about coding, robotics, electronics, and engineering design to create a robotic system." The course is part of Massachusetts Bay Community College's project titled iCREAT: A Pathway to Middle-skill Positions Through the Introduction to Coding, Robotics, Electronics, And Technology. The second course, iCREAT II, is available to view separately. Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Describe the system development cycle
  • Identify and draw use-cases
  • Write system requirements
  • Create an electronic circuit
  • Implement controls for circuits
  • Develop problem solving and critical and logical thinking skills
  • Analyze and distinguish a few computing devices
  • Apply engineering design methodologies
  • Design and build a robot support structure
  • Apply all skills to creatively implement a new robotic project
  • Obtain support for future career decision making
  • Communicate and work in a team

The course is divided into 15 modules that each introduce a topic related to "the basics of programmable robotic systems." Topics covered include: introduction to electronic components; introduction to coding environment and tools; Ohm's Law; microcontroller; diagramming, simulating, and creating circuits with a microcontroller; introduction to the motor control shield; introduction to SolidWorks parts and assemblies; and more.

Contents:
Module 1 provides an overview and introduction to the course including the course syllabus, schedule for the module, an introduction to the final project, two presentations that introduce key topics, and an additional document that features links to instructional videos.

All other modules include, at minimum, a module schedule and relevant presentation. Additional materials may include lab activities, projects, supplemental presentations, related files, and a document that features links to instructional videos.

For orientation purposes 0-iCREAT I - Module 1 - Schedule.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this learning module.
