Lecture 4: Construction of Optical Fiber
This video, from the Laser and Fiber Optics Regional Center, is the fourth lecture in a series of seven on fiber optics. Narrated by Dr. Mo Hasanovic, Professor of Electronics Engineering Technology at Indian River State College, this lecture covers topics related to the construction of optical fiber. Upon completion of this lecture students will be able to:
- Describe mutlimode and single mode step-index and graded-index fibers.
- Explain the different specialty fibers available.
- List the performance advantages of 62.5/125 µm multimode graded-index fibers.
- Identify the two basic types of single mode step-index fibers.
- Describe the fiber drawing process.
- List the benefits of cabled optical fibers over bare fibers.
Topics covered include: Optical Fibers and Cables, Optical Fiber Classification, Refractive Index Based Classification, Step-Index vs. Graded Index Fibers, Core Sizes in Various Types of Fibersm and more. The video runs 29:46 minutes in length and the other lectures in the series are available to view separately.
