This 7-page resource, made available by the STEM Guitar Project, is an activity on the strength of steel guitar strings. During the activity students over-tighten a steel guitar string to calculate the breaking strength and then compare the breaking strength to tabulated values for common steel alloys. The learning objectives for this activity are:

  1. Students will measure the fundamental frequency of a guitar string.
  2. Students will be able to relate string tension to string frequency.
  3. Students will calculate failure stress in a steel string.

This resource consists of the following sections: Description of Activity, Learning Objectives, Standards, Materials Required, Safety, and more. A quiz is also included.
