Lesson Description:

This lesson is the fourth of nine lessons from the Vocational Math: Contextualized for Construction course that was taught at Madison Area Technical College. During this lesson, students work in groups and as a whole class to practice estimating skills to allow them to find 'ballpark estimates' for the contextualized problem of tiling a room with vinyl tiles. Students then follow up by calculating the actual amount needed (including overhead) and the cost to complete the job. Math in the lesson includes converting between square inches and square feet, applying a percentage overhead charge to an estimate, calculate areas of rectangles and other shapes.

The expected total time for this lesson is 105 minutes. Students will need a scale drawing of the student lounge, construction master calculator, and a measuring tape to complete the lesson.
