Spacing (Lesson 9 of 9)
Lesson Description:
This resource is the last lesson in a series of nine from the Vocational Math: Contextualized for Construction course that was taught at Madison Area Technical College. In this lesson, students are introduced to the idea of creating even spacing and apply this concept to a number of contextualized situations including: calculating the layout for stairs, balusters, and siding. Students work in pairs with manipulatives with the balusters problem to aid in understanding the concept of the 'ghost baluster' as a method to ensure even spacing.
The expected total time for lesson is 145 minutes. The materials needed for this lesson include the following: 40 1/2" siding board with paper, sample siding spacing board to show, two 4x4’s and four balusters that are 12” long (one set per group), and Post-it grid paper. Students will need to bring a Construction Master Calculator, measuring tape.
