Program Description:

The Process Operations program curriculum is provided by Itasca Community College (ICC) and was created utilizing existing ICC course curriculum where possible, e.g., industrial math, technical writing, physics, etc. The Process Operations curriculum was created with emphasis on the technical and hands-on skills required for process technicians.

The specialized course development was divided into the following three areas: Process Fundamentals, Industrial Technologies, & Professional Development. Industrial Technologies includes the following courses:

  • Industrial Technologies I
  • Industrial Technologies II (Parts B & C)
  • Industrial Technologies III
  • Industrial Technologies IV

Course Description:

ENGT 1220 Process Operations Technical I is intended to introduce students to the components and equipment of the process operations industry such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers, compressors and turbines. This course will also cover applied industrial mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Course goals and outcomes include:

  • Complying with safety rules and operational/procedural protocols when working in the laboratory or with other process simulators and demonstrations.
  • Communicate all written and verbal work in an organized and professional manner.
  • Students will be able to identify and explain the operation principles of industrial process equipment.
  • Students will be able to recognize and read process equipment symbology utilized in the process industry.

Course Contents:

Course materials include a program overview, a syllabus, seven PowerPoint presentations, four student competency documents, a lab safety document, two lesson plans, and one homework assignment. The 1-page Process Operations Program Overview document includes information about the National Science Foundation grant project that resulted in the development of this curriculum.

The PowerPoint presentations cover the following topics: valves, gauges, rotating equipment, and heat transfers and exchangers.

The student competency documents include information about each unit of the course, including outcomes, lectures, demonstrations, labs, and homework.

The 1-page laboratory and process safety document includes information on safe attire and personal protective equipment.

The 73-page instructor lesson plan module includes a description of the lesson, competencies and performance standards, learning activities, and worksheets to facilitate the module.

The 53-page instructor lesson plan for module part two includes a description of the lesson, competencies and performance standards, learning activities, and worksheets to facilitate the module.

The 1-page homework assignment includes scenarios for students to calculate water flows needed to cool steam and heat water.

For orientation purposes Process Operations Tech I Syllabus Rev B.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this course.
