Program Description:

The Process Operations program curriculum is provided by Itasca Community College (ICC) and was created utilizing existing ICC course curriculum where possible, e.g., industrial math, technical writing, physics, etc. The Process Operations curriculum was created with emphasis on the technical and hands-on skills required for process technicians.

The specialized course development was divided into the following three areas: Process Fundamentals, Industrial Technologies, & Professional Development. Industrial Technologies includes the following courses:

  • Industrial Technologies I
  • Industrial Technologies II (Parts B & C)
  • Industrial Technologies III
  • Industrial Technologies IV

Course Description:

ENGT 1320 Process Operations Technical II is intended to introduce students to the equipment of the process operations industry, including boilers, AC/DC motors and generators. It is the second in a series of courses on technical knowledge and focuses on larger industrial equipment. This course is composed of two sections, Part B and Part C, that cover a range of topics related to process operations. Part B focuses on instrumentation and control, while Part C focuses on the Rankine Cycle.

Course goals and outcomes include:

  • Complying with safety rules and operational/procedural protocols when working in the laboratory or with other process simulators and demonstrations.
  • Communicate all written and verbal work in an organized and professional manner.
  • Students will be able to read, interpret and create or modify process documentation utilized in the process industry.
  • Students will be able to identify and explain the basic operation of equipment and instruments used in industrial processes such as physical and technical measurements.
  • Students will be able to identify and explain the components and operations of the Rankine cycle as well as boilers.
  • Students will learn how to draw, modify, read and accurately interpret the standard drawing types utilized in the process industry.

Course Contents:

Course materials for Part C on the Rankine Cycle include a program overview, a syllabus, four PowerPoint presentations, three student competency documents, and a document of course conclusions and problem solving. The 1-page Process Operations Program Overview document includes information about the National Science Foundation grant project that resulted in the development of this curriculum.

The PowerPoint presentations cover the following topics: process operations technologies, control valves, the Rankine Cycle, boilers, boiler fuel and air, feedwater systems, Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), and P&ID symbology.

The multiple student competency documents include information about each unit of the course, including outcomes, lectures, demonstrations, labs, and homework.

The 1-page project conclusions document outlines reflections on the development and implementation of the course, with instructor notes on problem solving.

For orientation purposes Process Operations Tech II Syllabus Part A Rev C.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this course.
