Course Description:

This 2-credit course highlights how motors and transformers are utilized in industrial applications. In the course, students wire and troubleshoot single and 3 phase AC motors, DC Motors, and stepper and servo motors using ladder diagrams. Students also program and wire variable frequency drives (VFD's) to control 3 phase AC motors. All topics are covered alongside failure modes, troubleshooting and the replacement of devices.

The following are an example of competencies assessed in the course:

  • Demonstrates the operating principle of a universal motor.
  • Demonstrates the operating principles of a single phase transformer.
  • Examines the operating principles of a 3 phase transformer.
  • Demonstrates the operation and control of single phase and three phase induction motors.

Course Contents:

Course materials are housed within a Canvas .imscc file. Materials include a syllabus, tests, and lab documents. The syllabus includes a brief description about the course, information about grading, course policies, and a course schedule.

For orientation purposes the Elkhorn Motors and Ind Elec Syllabus.docx.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this curriculum.

The .imscc file includes numerous folders and files from the Canvas course. A .zip file containing course documents is also included. Documentation for lab 13 is missing from the .zip file. Below is a list of resources included in the course:
