This video from InnovATEBIO provides a presentation from Kristyn VanderWaal Mills, who highlights an ATE grant at Saint Paul College that aims to research influences on students’ career goals at a diverse, urban community college. The recruitment of students from underrepresented backgrounds is explored. Links between career goals and demographic characteristics, science identity, self-efficacy, and intrinsic motivation are also described. Educators and administrators can use this information to understand motivations for major choice and better design program marketing and course content to encourage groups that are underrepresented in science to pursue scientific fields. Self-efficacy, a youth apprenticeship program, and other topics are highlighted. The video recording runs 37:25 minutes in length.
