This 6-page guide, from Edmonds Community College, provides information on developing learning objectives for professional development activities. This resource is part of the Professional Development Formative Assessment System (PD-FAS). PD-FAS was created by the Formative Assessment for Advanced Technician Education 2 (FAS4ATE2) project.

After reviewing this guide, users will be able to do the following:

  • articulate the importance of learning objectives in training programs,
  • differentiate between good and bad learning objectives, develop learning objectives for a PD program, and
  • reflect on the quality of existing learning objectives.

This resource includes 3-steps on how to develop learning objectives. Those include:

  • Step 1: Brainstorm key words for this PD program.
  • Step 2: Draft your learning objectives.
  • Step 3: Balance the levels of learning (e.g. surface or deep learning).

Other professional development materials from this project are available to view separately.
