These resources were developed by the National Convergence Technology Center (CTC) and include presentation documents and lab activities on essential 5G concepts and skills. These materials are intended to be used as a classroom module. This material was created in response to ongoing discussions about 5G expansion with the CTC's Business and Industry Leadership Team (BILT).

Presentation materials included a video presentation in .mov and .mp4 formats. The presentation begins with concepts to consider while watching the video. Some of these concepts include:

  • 5G will enable new applications along with increased vulnerabilities;
  • heavy reliance on fiber back haul;
  • capturing, integrating, and curating data from every part of the network;
  • IOT;
  • AI;
  • mobile edge computing;
  • and much more.

The video then discusses the history and evolution of mobile communication, 5G mobile network data traffic projections, comparison to 3G and 4G, market and use cases, 5G tech, definitions, and more. The video runs 54:18 minutes in length. Presentation slides in .pdf format and video captions are also included. An instructor guide includes notes on a number of slides and a What is 5G document provides additional information.

Two labs and five related documents are provided. The labs can be used independently of each other. Each lab includes a packet capture (.pcap) file. Lab 1 covers working with UDP encapsulated capture. The lab "... introduces Wireshark and packet capture files generally and then shows what UDP encapsulation looks like from the outside. The first packet capture file users "... will be looking at a simulations of 5G traffic specifically for mmwave transmissions.

Lab 2 covers working with un-encapsulated transmission. "This lab demonstrates what is encapsulated in the UDP transmissions like in Lab 1 and is between the tower and subsequent devices. The packet capture file "... is a demonstration of what could be in a UDP stream once it is no longer encapsulated.

For orientation purposes 5G Hi-Tec 2022 gfs .pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this collection.

Below is a list of the files contained within the .zip attachment. The size of each file is included in parenthesis.
