Module: Welding Metallurgy and Weldability of Commercial Alloys (1 of 2)

These PowerPoint slides from the National Center for Welding Education and Training are to be used for a training module on welding metallurgy. The module is designed for the professional development of welding educators teaching secondary and post-secondary welding programs. Educators may also repurpose the slides for an entire course in welding technology and welding metallurgy, and they may customize the slides to fit their students’ needs.

This course covers an introduction to concepts and fundamentals, and the best educational practice methods to teach heat flow, welding metallurgy, and the weldability of ferrous and non-ferrous commercial alloys. Laboratory work consists of welding metallurgy investigation on the welded samples and weldability testing for specific applications. The module is broken down into the following sections: basic metallurgy, weldability of carbon and low alloy steels, phase transformers, heat flow in welding, welding metallurgy, welding testing, welding of non-ferrous alloys, weldability of stainless steels, and the weldability of non-ferrous alloys.
