MatEdU Science Educational Handbook - Chapter 1: Introduction to Materials, Properties, and Uses

This resource is provided by the National Resource Center for Materials Technology Education (MatEdU) and is the first chapter from the MatEdU Science Educational Handbook. This handbook is designed to offer flexibility and adaptability in teaching materials science education and training. Its numerous activities serve as practical demonstrations of scientific principles that can be integrated into any curriculum. The primary objective of the Handbook is to equip programs with the necessary tools to introduce materials science concepts effectively, while also providing high-quality instruction for further study in the subject.

Chapter 1 "develops the science behind the everyday materials that students already know and use and introduces basic science concepts related to these materials." This chapter include the following units: The Materials All Around Us, PNNL Classification of Materials, PNNL Materials Science Applied to Household Appliances, The Odd Behavior of Ruber Bands, Fracture Resistant Ceramics, A Low Temperature Creep Experiment Using Common Solar, and much more. The chapter also includes instructors guides, instructor notes, and presentation slides.
