Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems -- Changing the Face of Heat Pumps

This presentation, provided by the Building Efficiency for a Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) Center, is from the BEST Center's 2022 Annual Institute. During the presentation, Eugene Silberstein, director of technical education and standards of the HVAC excellence and ESCO group, discusses how inverter technology has made heat pumps more dynamic and efficient. Unlike traditional heating and cooling systems that constantly cycle on and off, using excessive amounts of energy, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heat pump systems provide heat without cycling on and off. Silberstein discusses the benefits of VRF systems and goes into detail on how they function, including the purpose of motor speed and inverter control. Also discussed are older generation pump systems and challenges with heat pumps.

This video runs 26:18 minutes in length. Additional videos from the BEST 2022 Institute are available to view separately.
