This resource, published by Georgia Tech Research Institute, features a mathematics activity designed for eighth graders. In this activity, students "define extraction logistics using the Pythagorean Theorem and the linear equation for distance, rate and time." Doing this, students create a coordinate graph depicting various Hotshot firefighter team positions and "determine each teams’ pacing so that all teams meet at the helicopter extraction point at the same time." The activity is divided into four sections that last four class periods. The resource includes the following:

  • A 8-page teacher's prep guide for the activity
  • An 18-page curriculum workbook with an annotated teacher's version
  • Materials list
  • Supply checklist
  • A 7-page student worksheet packet
  • A video providing background for Hotshot firefighter teams
