Clean Energy Challenge - It's Electric
This resource, published by Georgia Tech Research Institute, features a mathematics activity designed for eighth graders. In this activity, "students use a simulation to develop a procedure and collect data regarding the number of houses powered by a solar thermal power plant under different conditions." Following that, "they reason quantitatively using linear rates of change to determine the most effective insulation material to use in the construction of the power plant." The activity is divided into four sections that span three class periods. The resource includes the following:
- A 10-page teacher's prep guide for the activity
- An 18-page curriculum workbook with an annotated teacher's version
- Materials list
- A 6-page student worksheet packet
- Two short videos that provide context around energy production and pollution
