Crab Aquarium Challenge - Crab Friend or Foe?

This resource, published by Georgia Tech Research Institute, features a mathematics activity designed for seventh graders. In this activity, students "model and graph scientific investigation data related to pheromone concentration versus blue crab mating and predator events." After that, students will "analyze rate of change and use proportional reasoning to select the mix of predators that will balance the ecosystem of an aquarium display." The activity is divided into four sections that span five class periods. The resource includes the following:

  • A 6-page teacher's prep guide for the activity
  • An 26-page curriculum workbook with an annotated teacher's version
  • Materials list and prep guide
  • Supply checklist
  • A 5-page student worksheet packet
  • Three short videos that provide context around crab pheromones and predator/prey relationships
