This resource, published by Georgia Tech Research Institute, features a mathematics and finance activity designed for eighth graders. In this activity, "students use linear systems of equations to explore the finances of funding and building a power plant using different insulation materials." Students will determine this based on thermal power plant simulation data and cost attributes. Finally, they will "calculate the break-even point when the plant begins to earn a profit, and decide which insulation to use in construction." The activity is divided into three sections that last five class periods. The resource includes the following:

  • An 8-page teacher's prep guide for the activity
  • A 20-page curriculum workbook with an annotated teacher's version
  • Materials list
  • Supply checklist
  • A 12-page student worksheet packet
  • A PowerPoint presentation on the activity
  • A mock-financial statement for the activity
