Microorganisms and Infection Lesson Plan

This 5-page lesson plan, provided by Northwestern Connecticut Community College, includes an activity that has students investigate bacterial growth under specific conditions using different sources. Sources include an unwashed hand, a hand washed with soap and water, a hand sanitized with antibacterial gel, and a hand sanitized with a solution determined by students to be antimicrobial. During the activity, students will take samples from these sources using a cotton swab and streak Petri dishes.
This lesson plan includes lesson objectives, a list of materials needed, investigation procedure, a lesson plan appendix, and more. The lesson was developed by a high school teacher after doing a microbiology laboratory externship at a company that makes syringes.
