Professional Development Hands-on Seminars

Through funding from the National Science Foundation, partner institutions in the University of Arkansas system are offering ADE-approved professional development during summer 2019. Participants will earn up to 30 PD hours in ADE FOCUS area 8.02.9 (Next generation learning/integrated technology) with a focus on applied geospatial technologies in the classroom to enhance curriculum content and reinforce student learning.


These seminars are FREE for all types of registrants. Lunch, light snacks, and bottled water are provided to all participants.


Licensed K12 Educators: For each offering there are 10 stipend slots available for licensed K12 Educators. To be eligible for a stipend you must be able to attend all days of training during the times specified, be a licensed K-12 educator, complete all necessary paperwork by the deadline, and agree to submit an outline of a class exercise that you plan to integrate using the technologies you have learned during training.


Other OPENGATE Partners: For each offering there are 5 non-stipend slots available to OPENGATE partners. OPENGATE partner slots are available to interested members of the community, industry-affiliates, or others who will not qualify for a stipend or do not wish to receive a stipend.


Stipend and Scholarship Amounts for eligible registrants: A limited number of stipends will be offered at each location for K-12 educators, as well as scholarships for community college students. Stipend and scholarship amounts are listed below.

Getting Started with Spatial Data Seminar, 3-day

  • Introduction to spatial technologies concepts
  • Creating and maintaining a free Esri Education organization account
  • How to take advantage of existing resources to enhance your classroom
  • Types of data, how to find them, and how to use them in GIS
  • Using basic analysis functions to encourage critical thinking
  • Building and sharing interactive maps and mapping applications
  • Introduction to creating and collecting data with Esri Survey123

Advanced Spatial Data and Analysis Seminar, 2-day*

  • Doing more with Esri Survey123 and Esri Survey123 Connect
  • Advanced data creation and editing
  • Setting up mobile data collection with Esri Connect and Garmin GLO receivers
  • Site suitability and marketing with location-based data

*Getting Started training, or prior experience, required.

As an NSF-funded workshop participant you will be asked to provide feedback about the seminar itself and the use of created materials in the classroom environment. Stipends for participants are available on a limited basis. Professional development hours are applicable for educators, any individual holding a license issued by the State Board of Education, specifically including without limitation teachers, administrators, library media specialists, and counselors.
