Bio-Link Webinar: Exploring Career Opportunities with Biotech-Careers.org

The biotech industry has been growing faster than other areas of the US economy.  Biotech positions offer good salaries and benefits, interesting work, and opportunities for advancement.  Nevertheless, many biotechnology education programs struggle with student recruitment.  Two contributing factors are the lack of knowledge among high school teachers and students concerning jobs in biotechnology and the misconception that all STEM careers require an advanced degree.  This webinar will showcase Bio-Link’s interactive career website that addresses misconceptions and informs students about the many opportunities in biotech.

Geo-Capacity Building in Europe Webinar

Geo business is booming in Europe. Projects like GeoSkills Plus have shown that in many countries, demand for a geospatial workforce is not being met by supply. Central administration (the European Commission and Ministries of Education) seem largely unaware of the problems being faced by the industry. I suggest that more radical change in education is necessary, integrating Geo-ICT in different education sectors. In order to achieve this, connecting all stakeholders will be essential. This webinar reports on initiatives to support and enhance geospatial education in Europe and specifically those undertaken with the European Association of Geographers. It suggests the importance of 'hidden work' developing a strong lobby for geospatial education for all and sets out goals and new projects to redress the situation.

SCME Hands-online Microsystems Academy: Micro Pressure Sensors

Micro pressure sensors are MEMS components designed to measure absolute or differential pressures.  They convert physical quantities such as airflow and liquid levels into pressure values that are measured by electronic sensing circuits such as the Wheatstone bridge.  Micro pressure sensors are found in cars, airplanes, mobile devices, gaming devices, athletic devices and medical devices. They are one of the fastest growing MEMS components due to their versatility, size, reliability, and application potential.

In this topic you explore applications of micro pressure sensors, how they work, and how they are fabricated.  The primary activity for this topic is to build a micro PS model using materials supplied in the SCME kit "Modeling a Micro Pressure Sensor".  On the model PS, you construct a Wheatstone bridge as a sensing circuit. After studying how a Wheatstone bridge works, you apply this knowledge to an analysis of your PS model.  You test the model's operation as pressure is applied and develop calibration curves that show the sensor's changes in voltage as different pressures are applied.

The concepts introduced and explored in this topic can be applied to electronics, physics, materials science, chemistry, mathematics, data acquisition and analysis, and micro and nanotechnologies.

The Role of Science Diplomacy in International Crises: Syria as a Case Study

AAAS Auditorium1200 New york Ave NWWashingtonDC20005USA

The ongoing Syrian Refugee Crisis is recognized as one of the worst humanitarian disasters since World War II. Although the Crisis has not typically been framed in the context of science and technology (S&T), it encompasses many complex issues with scientific components, including the exacerbating effects of climate change, public health issues, cultural heritage destruction, human migration, and scientific diasporas. The objective of this symposium is to explore how science diplomacy can contribute to international crisis response and recovery by mitigating the factors that result in the fueling of conflict, the displacement of people, and the resulting challenges. Using the Syrian Crisis as a case study, we will discuss how S&T and science diplomacy can inform responses to future international security, environmental, and humanitarian crises. Through sessions focused on synthesizing the S&T-related contributing factors and consequences of the Syrian Crisis, we will identify how to apply lessons learned from Syria to help prevent or mitigate future international crises, and we will explore the pathways by which scientists can engage in crisis response and recovery.
