This workshop will be an exploration of the world of nanotechnology. Participants will learn about the growing applications of nanotechnology in many industries including the biotechnology, MEMS, optoelectronics, chemical, and nanoelectronics industries. The basics of nanofabrication processes and tools will be covered and emphasized through processing labs held in the class 10 cleanrooms of the Penn State Nanofabrication Facility and the CNEU Teaching Cleanroom. On Thursday, November 18, students from Waterbury-area high schools will view demonstrations on advanced technologies used in manufacturing, will tour the campus and hear from representatives who can give them information on educational pathways that will help them obtain manufacturing and engineering careers.
That evening, Mr. Wohler will conduct a special seminar on additive manufacturing for parents, college students and for anyone interested in the community. He will repeat his talk the following morning on Friday, November 19 at a special seminar for educators, manufacturers and local legislators. Following his talk, participants can attend the manufacturing demonstrations, to be followed by a talk from a Connecticut Business and Industry Association economist on the state of manufacturing in Connecticut. Participating educators will receive .4 CEUs.
The Thursday evening event, which begins at 6:30 with an ice cream social, is open to the general public. The Friday morning event for educators, manufacturers and legislators begins at 7:30, and includes a continental breakfast. Mr. Wohler's remarks will begin at 8:45.
The Regional Center for Next Generation Manufacturing is sponsoring a two-day event at Naugatuck Valley Community College that highlights additive manufacturing with renowned guest speaker Terry Wohlers, an international authority on rapid prototyping. This workshop covers the applications and operation of MEMS cantilever and MEMS cantilever arrays. This workshop will simulate the dynamic operation of MEMS cantilevers - cantilevers that use a change in resonant frequency to identify changes in cantilever mass due to the accumulation of micro and nano-size materials on the cantilever’s surface. Participants will use various materials to study how a dynamic cantilever’s operation is affected by its dimensions and mass. Workshop discussions will include where and how this material and the related activities can be incorporated into an existing curriculum.

This National Science Foundation STEM Guitar Project provides innovative professional development to high school and community college faculty in collaborative design and rapid manufacturing. Faculty teams will take part in an intense five day guitar design/build project. Each faculty member will build his/her own custom electric guitar and will engage in student centered learning activities that relate the guitar design to specific math, science and engineering topics. Participants will leave this weeklong experience with their custom-made guitars, curriculum modules that can be immediately integrated into the faculty team''s school curriculum, and much more.
The Industrial Advisory Committee for FLATE brings industry directly to the Center. This board consists of members of industry partners from manufacturing community, representatives from related professional and industry organizations, and others in the community interested in promoting and supporting education and training of the manufacturing workforce at various levels. This group will meet 2-3 times per year and is under the guidance of the St. Petersburg College Principal Investigator, Mr. Brad Jenkins.
