How to Utilize AR/VR and Distance Education for Microelectronics, Nanotechnology, Semiconductor Tech

Join Dr. Rick Vaughn in this professional development workshop on June 30, 2023. Dr. Vaughn will engage participants in creative ways to utilize existing resources throughout the MNT-EC community to enable Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality (AR/VR) and hybrid delivery of MNT and semiconductor educational modules, regardless of educational level or location.

Rio Salado College has a mission to “reinvent the learning experience”. Founded as the “College without Walls”, they were one of the first Community Colleges to meet the students where they are rather than have the students come regularly to the College. Often, this hybrid delivery is online, but for technician programs they have developed ways to use a variety of resources to ensure high quality hands-on instruction and labs when it is necessary to do so.

Recognizing and Reducing Implicit Bias in the Classroom

Recent studies have shown that the opportunity gap persists for students of color in community colleges. Increasingly, students of color are making community colleges their first choice in higher education to seek certification, marketable job skills, or a degree; however, they are not completing their education at the same rate as their White counterparts. While any number of factors may contribute to this gap, we cannot rule out implicit bias as a factor. Biases not only have a negative impact on students’ self-esteem, they can reduce students’ will to try, resulting in inequitable outcomes. This webinar paints a picture of what implicit bias looks like in the classroom and provides strategies for reducing biases that inevitably impact students’ success.

By the end of this workshop, participants know or will be able to:

  • Have a clearer understanding of what implicit bias is and the factors that contribute to it.
  • Understand how to recognize implicit bias in ourselves and others.
  • Have strategies for preventing and interrupting bias in the classroom.
