Beginners Microcontroller Workshop

ARM processors provide a simple platform for introducing microcontrollers in curriculum with a pathway ahead for large projects and life-long learning. Southwest Center for Microsystems Education (SCME) Fall 2013 Workshop Series: Micropressure Sensor

This workshop cover topics related to MEMS pressure sensors. Topics include simple series and parallel electronic circuits, the series-parallel Wheatstone bridge circuit, strain gauges, how a MEMS pressure sensor works, its applications, and how it is fabricated. Activities include measuring resistance, voltage and current, comparing the resistivity characteristic of various materials, building a macro-sized pressure sensor, and testing your pressure sensor for changes in applied pressures. This workshop uses SCME's Pressure Sensor model kit to provide hands-on learning of many of these activities.

Basic Photovoltaics (Solar Electricity) Online

This six-week online course uses a series of online presentations, webinars, topic resources, assignments, and quizzes to teach the basics of solar electric systems. Participants will learn how photovoltaic (PV) systems work, diagram the four PV system types, describe and identify components, understand the best application and limitations of each system type, define the solar window, make energy efficiency recommendations, estimate system loads, and understand the basics of PV site assessment.

This course is an online course and will require participants to attend an online webinar for each week of the course.

PV Site Assessor Training Online

Participants in this four-week online course will learn how to perform a PV site assessment for a home or small business. The course will cover site assessment tools, load analysis, energy efficiency recommendations, array placement options, basic system sizing, cost estimates, and evaluating existing infrastructure on site. Participants will learn how to access online tools for solar resource analysis, PV system performance calculators, and incentives.

This course is an online course and will require participants to attend an online webinar for each week of the course.

To receive the MREA PV Site Assessor Certificate, participants will need to complete this course, two practice site assessments, pass the written test, and pay a $50 exam fee.

STEM Faculty Workshop: Genomic Approaches in BioSciences

Collaborating with 12 community colleges and Bio-Link, the DNA Learning Center is offering week-long Genomic Approaches in BioSciences workshops. Workshop participants will utilize cutting-edge science tools in hands-on laboratories and bioinformatics investigations, and deepen awareness of rewarding careers for their students. Participants will update their pedagogy while networking with biotech leaders and colleagues. A continuum of faculty from secondary education, 2-year colleges, and universities are invited to apply. The National Science Foundation, Division of Undergraduate Education’s Advanced Technological Education (NSF-ATE) program is funding all instruction, workshop materials, meals/refreshments, and a stipend of $300. Further support for travel or other related expenses is not available.

The Genomic Approaches in BioSciences workshops will focus on four key technologies - PCR, DNA Sequencing, RNA interference, and Bioinformatics - that will prepare students for specialized life science elective courses, independent research projects, and biotechnology careers.

Genomic Approaches in BioSciences will integrate theoretical, laboratory, and computer technology with practical advice on classroom management and career exploration. Time will be included for independent work, lesson planning, and preparation for classroom projects. Each workshop is led by DNALC staff members and college faculty who collaborated in the development of the course modules.

Careers, Technology, and You

The Computer Science Department at Framingham State University is hosting their annual “Careers, Technology and You” event at Framingham State on Friday, October 25th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Participants are also invited to tour the university campus before or after the event. Over 350 high school students participated in this event last year and were enthusiastic in their responses to the event survey.

A representative from Microsoft will be the master of ceremonies for the Careers, Technology and You event and will identify current innovations taking place at Microsoft. In addition there will be a keynote speaker and several panelists from local industry who will share their observations and experiences within their respective fields. All of the panelists would love for students to come with questions. In addition to great information and knowledgeable speakers, there will be fun give-a-ways and students will have an opportunity to speak with the panelists after the event.

This workshop covers many topics related to the DNA microarray. Topics include DNA transcription, DNA hybridization, DNA microarray types, applications, fabrication and interpretation. The SCME GeneChip model kit is used to give participants the experience of simulating the fabrication process, an application process, and interpreting a microarray's results. Additional activities reinforce the understand of DNA transcription and hybridization.
