Opioid addiction has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, with overdoses and deaths caused by prescribed and “street� drugs on the rise. The accelerating abuse of opioids includes not only painkillers that have legitimate uses, but heroin and the synthetic opioid fentanyl as well. The epidemic is not limited to inner city pockets of poverty; small-town America is also overcome by a tsunami of opioid addiction, putting strains on state and local social services and criminal justice systems. Join us for an event that will address the demographics and sociology of the opioid epidemic, the science of opioid addiction, and treatment options.

"Digital Innovation Through International Research Collaboration: Prospects for U.S.-Japan Research Collaboration"  is co-organized with the Embassy of Japan, the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

The New York Geographic Alliance has made arrangements with Broome County Teacher Center to hold a full-day mini-conference on watersheds in the Greater Binghamton Area. We will study the watershed of the Susquehanna from several perspectives - models, maps, aerial imagery. We will also use the GIANT Map of New York to help us discuss watersheds in our state. In the afternoon, we will go to a park to test the water quality of the Chenango River and the Susquehanna River. Weather permitting, we will go to Confluence Park in Binghamton and to Chenango Valley State Park a few miles to the north. We will be working with Andrea Decker, Director of Education at Roberson Museum and Science Center. The NYGA kits are designed to be "kid-friendly" and have been used successfully from upper elementary to college level. Prof. Stephen Vermette of Buffalo State College will coordinate this part of the workshop. Our goal is to create data from all over New York's part of the watershed. If teachers decide to partner with us, we can supply them with kits that they can keep at their school. We will also supply you with other resources you might need to make your program successful. 

Each year, the Mentor-Connect project team produces a cost-free webinar that highlights the process for filling out various forms that are required in the National Science Foundation (NSF) Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant proposal process. In 2016, we will offer this technical assistance webinar again with a fresh spin.

In the last decades 3D city models have been used mainly for visualisation. However, nowadays they are being increasingly employed for simulations and spatial analyses in many application domains. For example, they can be used to estimate the energy demand of buildings, and as a platform to support smart cities. How can policy decision-making at the national and international levels make better use of our scientific understanding of the services provided to human societies by nature (ecosystem services)? Through a variety of formats, aimed at both theory and practice, our symposium will promote discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of placing monetary value on biodiversity and developing and applying the associated valuation tools. Furthermore, we aim to spark conversation around the topic of what constitutes an ecosystem service. Speakers will review the rationale behind ecosystem services valuation and its recent history, explore the benefits and limitations of the approach using domestic and international case studies, and showcase examples of tools currently used for identifying and valuing ecosystem services. We draw on the practical experiences of people working across sectors: government, NGO, and academia.

Recent trends have seen a rise in the use of monoclonal antibody therapeutics (Mabs) as the medical community strives towards a more personalized approach to treating diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disorders. This workshop for two or four-year college faculty will teach Mab production Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell culture in spin flasks and bioreactors, sampling and monitoring growth parameters including cell viability, optical density, glucose and lactate levels, as well as performing ELISA for active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) detection.

This hands on exploration will show how Python can be used to automate processes in GIS software. The emphasis will be on Esri ArcMap Desktop, but other software will be discussed. The participants in this Exploratorium should be solid GIS users. Scripts will be provided as well as data so that the participants can continue the learning process after this four-hour event. The learner will be provided with the GeoTech Center complete course on Map Programming. The purpose of this event is not to make the learner an expert programmer but to see how processes can be automated in mapping software. Those in this workshop should complete the first two chapters in GeoTech Center Map Programming course prior to attending the session and this knowledge will be assumed.

 

Please join Stephen Chino, PLS, for an instructional exploratorium that will introduce participants to parallel workflows for working with LiDAR data in both ArcGIS and QGIS. Participants will receive instruction on how to find and acquire data into their GIS and produce various raster and vector datasets for use in their GIS environment. Some familiarity with ESRI products is recommended and will help to insure that all classroom time is used efficiently. A working knowledge of ArcGIS is needed as this Exploratorium is not for beginners.
