This event is being organized with our hosts UCSB, and will cover several aspects Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Ion Beam etch and deposition processes and technologies.
Guest speakers from renowned research & manufacturing organizations, speakers from UCSB, and technical experts from Oxford Instruments will all speak on topics from the fundamentals of these technologies, through to User experiences, and hints and tips from Oxford Instruments. The program will also allow plenty of time for discussion and questions. In addition there will be a technical poster session by Oxford Instruments.

Normandale Community College (NCC) will host a two-day, Plasma-Aided Manufacturing Workshop for high school, community college and university faculty involved in technician education on March 19th and 20th, 2009. This workshop is funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education Program. The two-day workshop will cover the following topics: • Introduction to Plasma Physics • Plasma Sources • Transmission Line Fundamentals • RF Delivery & Impedance Matching • Sputtering as a Manufacturing Process. The workshop will be divided between classroom presentations/discussions and hands-on laboratory sessions. Participants will view demonstrations and perform experiments in NCC’s Plasma Technology Laboratory. The workshop will begin at 8:30 am on, March 19th, and conclude at 4:00 pm on Friday, March 20th. NCC’s grant will cover the cost of all workshop materials, lodging for 3 nights, meals, and local transportation in Bloomington, MN. This SME Composites Manufacturing 2009 webinar characterizes the special features of milling and drilling CFRP and develops aspects for new tool geometries for milling CFRP/Titanium. This starts with a challenge for engineers and tech: “On and annualized basis, find a half million seconds for every mold in the shop.” Partly this is done to keep the engineers and techs interested. More importantly it allows money to be generated as both extra profit for the company and money available to give out raises for a successful completion of this challenge. The presentation starts looking at a typical part. Then reviews what would happen if segments of the process were improved: Reduced scrap, reduced cycle time, regrind usage enhancement, weight reduction and reduced setup times. While the cumulative effect of all of these improvements isn’t completely additive it shows how this goal can be achieved.

CICMHE sponsors a Material Handling Teachers Institute (MHTI) to prepare new faculty for instruction in the field of materials handling as well as to enhance the skills of experienced faculty. MHTI is for both engineering and business faculty who are directly involved in the teaching of material flow systems and/or facility logistics. The National Science Foundation has provided grant funding for the Mid Pacific Information and Communications Technologies Center to coordinate, improve, and promote ICT education, with an emphasis on 2-year colleges, in northern California, northern Nevada, southern Oregan, Hawaii and the Pacific Territories.
