How to Communicate Science to the Public — Or Die Trying

Please join AAAS for a lecture by Paul Offit on communicating science to the public. We have moved from scientific illiteracy to science denialism. Today, people simply declare their own truths: vaccines cause autism; climate change isn’t real; evolution and creationism are equally valid hypotheses. As a consequence, science is losing its rightful place as a source of truth. Scientists are in the best position to combat this growing trend. However, those who choose to explain science to the press and the public face many challenges. The AAAS will discuss some of those challenges and offer suggestions on how best to deal with them.

2018 Leadership Seminar in Science & Technology Policy

The AAAS Leadership Seminar in Science and Technology Policy is a "crash course" in science and technology (S&T) policy, designed for those who need to know how S&T policy works. Revamping Robotics Education to Meet 21st Century Workforce Needs

The interdisciplinary nature of robots make robotics a useful STEM pedagogical tool. There is also a significant need for industrial certification programs in robotics. Robots are increasingly used across industry sectors to improve production throughputs while maintaining product quality. The benefits of robotics, however, depend on workers with up-to-date knowledge and skills to maintain and use existing robots, enhance future technologies, and educate users. It is critical that education efforts respond to the demand for robotics specialists by offering courses and professional certification in robotics and automation. This NSF sponsored workshop introduces a new approach for teaching Industrial Robotics in electrical engineering technology programs to match industry needs and provide a replicable model for programs around the US.

This workshop is offered to faculty members of two- and four year institutions and designed for the instructors who wish to increase their experience in Industrial Robotics and is interested in revamping existing or developing new courses in Industrial Robotics.

Webinar: Americans’ Changing Views of Renewable Energy Policies

For ten years, the University of Michigan and Muhlenberg College have conducted the National Surveys on Energy and Environment (NSEE), which explore Americans’ attitudes towards energy and climate change. The researchers recently published "Solar, Wind, and State Mandates: 10 Years of Renewable Energy in the NSEE," which considers how Americans’ views on solar and wind energy have changed over the past decade. The report also explores attitudes towards and knowledge of state energy mandates, such as renewable portfolio standards. Active Learning Using Free Polling Software

Active learning has been proven to help students analyze and apply course materials to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts being taught. Active-learning strategies include brainstorming, think-pair-share, case studies, discussions, in-class demonstrations, and many other deep-learning techniques. Kahoot, a free survey and quiz application, can be used to engage students in discussions about key events and survey them to assess their understanding of the course content. During this webinar, the facilitator discusses active-learning strategies and shares examples of engaging class discussions using Kahoot. By the end of this webinar, you will understand what is meant by the term active learning and are able to build a Kahoot survey and quiz and gather immediate results and feedback.
