Please join AAAS for a lecture by Paul Offit on communicating science to the public. We have moved from scientific illiteracy to science denialism. Today, people simply declare their own truths: vaccines cause autism; climate change isn’t real; evolution and creationism are equally valid hypotheses. As a consequence, science is losing its rightful place as a source of truth. Scientists are in the best position to combat this growing trend. However, those who choose to explain science to the press and the public face many challenges. The AAAS will discuss some of those challenges and offer suggestions on how best to deal with them.

Continuing Technical Education (CTE) is key to filling a great number of openings in todays economy. A CTE experience prepares students for opportunities in various career pathways. The conference will highlight CTE success stories as well as point out currently available best practices. The keynote speaker will be Mandi Damman who is Chief Engineer for Autonomous Vehicles at General Motors.

The National Association of Biology Teachers represents and supports teachers, students, scientists, and allied professional organizations to enhance and improve biological literacy for all. The NABT Professional Development Conference will begin with workshops and field trips followed by the opening session speaker scheduled from 3:00PM on Thursday, November 8th. Educational sessions will be scheduled all day on Friday, November 9th and Saturday, November 10th. Saturday will conclude with the closing speaker at 5:00PM followed by a special evening event. The interdisciplinary nature of robots make robotics a useful STEM pedagogical tool. There is also a significant need for industrial certification programs in robotics. Robots are increasingly used across industry sectors to improve production throughputs while maintaining product quality. The benefits of robotics, however, depend on workers with up-to-date knowledge and skills to maintain and use existing robots, enhance future technologies, and educate users. It is critical that education efforts respond to the demand for robotics specialists by offering courses and professional certification in robotics and automation. This NSF sponsored workshop introduces a new approach for teaching Industrial Robotics in electrical engineering technology programs to match industry needs and provide a replicable model for programs around the US.

This workshop is offered to faculty members of two- and four year institutions and designed for the instructors who wish to increase their experience in Industrial Robotics and is interested in revamping existing or developing new courses in Industrial Robotics.

This Project Access workshop focuses on the implications and application of Universal Design for Learning. Non-traditional students learn differently, so if we design instruction from the beginning to reach a diverse group of students, our teaching will be more effective, and students will excel.

This workshop offers training on how to make educational materials more accessible and engaging for all learners, especially Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

Researchers Joshua Smith and Stacey Gifford from IBM's Nanobiotechnology Program cover the latest research on the relevant biology found in fluids from liquid biopsies and discuss opportunities in microfluidics for disruptive technology development to isolate and interrogate these biomarkers, aiding disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment-response monitoring.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) carries out and funds biomedical research in an effort to prevent and cure common and rare diseases. The organization also trains the next generation of doctors, researchers, and medical support staff who will improve human health in the future, both across the country and around the world.

 

This colloquium is designed to provide community college students who are conducting undergraduate research the opportunity to share research, develop professional meeting skills and network with students from across the country. 

The two day colloquium will be hosted at Glendale Community College and the Renaissance Phoenix Glendale Hotel. The event will include student poster sessions and various sessions on undergraduate research at community colleges.

For ten years, the University of Michigan and Muhlenberg College have conducted the National Surveys on Energy and Environment (NSEE), which explore Americans’ attitudes towards energy and climate change. The researchers recently published "Solar, Wind, and State Mandates: 10 Years of Renewable Energy in the NSEE," which considers how Americans’ views on solar and wind energy have changed over the past decade. The report also explores attitudes towards and knowledge of state energy mandates, such as renewable portfolio standards. Kahoot, a free survey and quiz application, can be used to engage students in discussions about key events and survey them to assess their understanding of the course content. During this webinar, the facilitator discusses active-learning strategies and shares examples of engaging class discussions using Kahoot.
