Webinar: Recruitment for Nanotechnology Enrollment

This presentation is aimed at providing insight and best practices to implement when recruiting students into STEM-related fields of study, specifically students from a wide breadth of academic disciplines into a one-semester nanotechnology Capstone Semester. A NACK Center staff member will discuss these strategies, as well as provide tips on how to promote existing programs to students. We will also share materials used in a NACK recruitment presentation, which is constantly updated, to introduce students to nanotechnology and the nano-scale, as well as highlight current and innovative research that is changing their lives on a daily basis. This is a great way to learn how to keep your content “fresh” and to truly connect with your current and potential students who are pursuing STEM-related fields of study.

In just one year’s time, Jamie Houseknecht, who is serving as the NACK College Recruitment Coordinator, has increased enrollment by over 25% within the NMT Capstone Semester. He recruits students from all of the 33 partner institutions across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which are at both the associate and baccalaureate degree granting level. By connecting with students via interactive discussion, open forum-style events, following up with interested parties, and relating to them on a personal level, Jamie and the NACK National ATE Center have witnessed the highest average enrollment over three semesters since the NMT Capstone Semester began in 1999.

NanoDays

(9 days)

NanoDays is our nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering and its potential impact on the future. NanoDays events are organized by participants in the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net), and take place at over 200 science museums, research centers, and universities across the country from Maine to Hawaii.

What Can YOU Do?

NanoDays activities often bring university researchers together with science museum educators, creating unique learning experiences. NanoDays engages people of all ages in a miniscule world where materials have special properties and new technologies have spectacular promise.
Many NanoDays celebrations will combine simple hands-on activities for young people with events exploring current research for adults. One popular activity involves visitors working together to build a giant balloon model of a carbon nanotube. (Real carbon nanotubes, which are 1/50,000th of the width of a human hair, have extraordinary strength and unusual electrical properties that make them useful in electronics and materials science.

Other NanoDays activities demonstrate different, unexpected properties of materials at the nanoscale -- sand that won’t get wet even under water, water that won’t spill from a teacup, and colors that depend upon particle size.

Some NanoDays participants host public forums, discussions about the risks and benefits of particular appllications of nanotechnology. Many participating universities host public tours of their laboratories that work with nanoscale science and technology.

GeoTech Center Webinar Series â Implementation of Geospatial Technologies across Community College Campuses

As the Geospatial Industry continues to grow and expand, so too does the demand for geospatially skilled and geospatially knowledgeable individuals. In order to prepare individuals who will enter the workforce, the creation of opportunities to explore geospatial technologies is fundamental. In an effort to increase student exposure to geospatial technologies, a number of community colleges have taken an approach to integrate these technologies into a range of existing courses on their campuses by faculty members who have little to no experience using geospatial technologies. These faculty members work in a variety of disciplines where the infusion of geospatial technologies enhanced their students’ interest and understanding of issues and situations associated with that discipline and increased their ability to think more holistically or conceptually about discipline topics. Due to the nature of the discipline and the level of expertise of the faculty member, a range of integration methods were used. Through the establishment of the National Geospatial Technology Center, faculty members from community colleges across the country have a platform from which they can acquire resources to advance geospatial technologies across their campuses. This presentation will examine how faculty members with little experience with geospatial technologies were introduced to technologies, the methodologies used to integrate them into different courses, and the various disciplines that geospatial technologies have been infused in.

2010 American Society for Engineering Education Northeast Section Conference

(2 days) BostonMA02115

Students today have been born and brought up in a digital world characterized by multimedia, and social networking. This extends beyond highly technical gadgets, and includes opportunities and encouragement for self-directed learning, creativity, and empowerment. Engineering education must embrace these changes and address the challenges and opportunities that it faces. We need to understand how the digital generation learns, communicates, and socializes in ways which are significantly different than the previous generation. This generation can seem to be, even to those only one generation older, both extraordinarily sophisticated and strangely narrow. In the coming years, how should engineering and technology education respond to the needs of the digital generation? This will be the theme for an exciting and thought provoking weekend of professional workshops, presentations, and discussions at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
