Genomics in Education Workshop

(2 days) Hudson Alpha Institute601 Genome Way NWHuntsvilleAL35806

The iPlant Collaborative (iPlant) develops computational (cyber) infrastructure to provide researchers and educators access to the large datasets and informatics tools that drive modern biology. The free, 2-day Genomics in Education workshop introduces educational adaptations of iPlant discovery environments developed to support innovative curricula and exciting student research projects to prepare the scientists of the future. In addition, workshop participants will conduct a novel DNA barcoding lab, in which students identify plants by amplifying, sequencing and analyzing their DNA. Instruction and workshop materials, lunches and a stipend of $100, are funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Further support for travel or other related expenses cannot be provided.

Genomics in Education focuses on DNA Subway, iPlant’s first educational discovery environment. DNA Subway was developed to make high-level genome analysis broadly available to students and educators. Annotating and comparing genome sequences can bring to life elements of gene structure, function, and evolution that previously could only be taught as abstractions. By assembling gene models, comparing genomes, constructing phylogenetic trees and analyzing DNA barcodes, DNA Subway users engage in their own learning as they acquire a range of conceptual and process knowledge and begin to grasp the challenges and promises of a data-driven, modern biology.

Your ATE Proposal: Got Evaluation?

A strong evaluation plan that is well integrated into your grant proposal will strengthen your submission and maybe even give you a competitive edge. In this webinar, long-time members of the ATE community will provide insights on ways to enhance your proposal and avoid common pitfalls with regard to evaluation. We’ll walk through EvaluATE’s Evaluation Planning Checklist for ATE Proposals, which provides detailed guidance on how to address evaluation throughout a proposal—from the project summary to the budget justification. We’ll share examples of how to incorporate results from previous evaluations in the Results of Prior NSF Support section, present a coherent evaluation plan linked to project activities and goals, and budget for an external evaluation (among other things). We’ll have plenty of time for questions and discussion with our knowledgeable and experienced panel.

2014 World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems

(5 days) Cobo Center1 Washington BlvdDetroitMI48226USA

The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America) is proud to host the 2014 World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, September 7-11, 2014 in Detroit, Michigan in partnership with ERTICO and ITS Asia-Pacific.

As you’re probably aware, the World Congress only comes to North America every third year so this will be our most important gathering until 2017.

Next September at Detroit’s newly refurbished Cobo Hall, more than 10,000 of the world’s leading transportation policymakers, researchers, high-tech innovators, and business professionals from the United States, Europe and Asia will gather to share the latest intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications from around the globe.

The automakers are excited to showcase their city as well as the latest technological developments in the transportation industry. CEOs from the auto world and major corporations will lead programs and the event will display more demonstrations than ever before.

We’re planning an array of technical tours highlighting the latest regional, national, and global deployments. From connected vehicles to freight management and smart parking to cutting edge ITS architecture…you’ll see it all.

Few places in the world have the concentration of transportation companies, research institutions, and deploying agencies as Detroit, but the Motor City is about more than cars. Detroit and its Canadian neighbor Windsor, Ontario is also an integrated hub for the highway, commercial vehicle and transit industries.

More than any Intelligent Transport meeting we’ve ever held, the World Congress in Detroit will connect our past with our future. We’re working hard to make sure it will be the most valuable learning, networking and collaborative event you’ll attend in 2014. We’ll see you there.

Early registration ends June 16.

Students Collaborating to Undertake Tracking Efforts for Sturgeon Educator Workshop

USFWS Presquile National Wildlife Refuge4700 Bermuda Hundred RoadChesterVA23836

Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon are two sturgeon species that can be found in coastal waters, estuaries, and major rivers along the East Coast of the United States. Because of overfishing for sturgeon eggs which were processed into caviar, shortnose and Atlantic sturgeon have been listed throughout their range under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The SCUTES (Students Collaborating to Undertake Tracking Efforts for Sturgeon) program is the collaboration between NOAA Fisheries (NMFS), sturgeon researchers, teachers, and informal educators to bring more awareness about sturgeon and the ESA to the classroom. NMFS has worked with educators to develop lesson plans and activities relating to sturgeon. These lesson plans meet the National Education Standards, and cover a variety of subjects including Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math. These lesson plans are generally for grades 3-12, but they can be adapted to fit your students’ needs. Teachers are invited to borrow SCUTES kits that contain lesson plans and activity supplies from NMFS and SCUTES partners.

The goal of this workshop is to introduce new SCUTES educators to the educational kits and elementary level activities. Educators will participate in the activities, and are welcome to provide any constructive feedback. Each teacher will receive a SCUTES cd that contains all the lesson plans and various handouts.
