Cyberwatch West Ethical Hacking Class

(5 days)

The Ethical Hacking Course is an advanced course that covers many of the common attacks used by
hackers to exploit systems, such as SQL injection, spear phishing and buffer overflows. The instructor
performs a live demonstration of these techniques and shows you how to create, pack, and deploy
malware in a realistic network environment. The class also includes demonstrations and labs on IPv6
Exploitation, Denial of Service (DoS), extracting passwords from RAM, and more. Participants will have
access to 19 hands-on labs where they will be able to attack systems and use tools that are part of
every hacker’s toolkit, including Poison Ivy, Dark Comet, Metasploit, and Armitage. Attendees of this
workshop will better understand the hacker’s perspective and methodology.

K-12 Resources in Nanotechnology

The purpose of the webinar will be to share resources available for the inclusion of nanoscale science and engineering into the K-12 curriculum and how this inclusion can meet state science standards.

Nanoscale science and engineering (NSE) is truly an interdisciplinary endeavor in that it combines engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, and information technology. This rapidly developing field is expected to impact almost every facet of human life and thus has been termed the “next” technical revolution. For many, the struggle is how to include NSE into the curriculum for K-12 students. This webinar will share a variety of resources (books, online simulations, websites, teacher written lessons, etc.) that can be used to introduce NSE. Examples will be provided to show how NSF can be linked to science curriculum currently being taught and how NSE ties into STEM.

Designing and Using Videos in Undergraduate Geoscience Education

Video-based educational resources are well suited to explaining the dynamic nature of geosciences, specifically processes that challenge students to think both temporally and spatially. In this workshop, through a series of four monthly sessions, participants will explore the best practices for designing and using videos, review the existing technology (hardware and software), share resources, develop new ones, and discuss the challenges and opportunities.

The workshop will include a series of web-based synchronous and asynchronous sessions, including presentations, sharing among participants, on-line chat sessions, and time for guided group work. A primary focus of the workshop will be the development of online resources for geoscience faculty and departments that assist with ongoing video design and use in geoscience education including examples drawn from participant experiences. These materials will be published on the website for use by other faculty. We will also work to develop a network of video developers and end-users.

This virtual workshop, held for two hours on the first Friday of the month, for four months during Spring 2014, is open to all faculty who teach undergraduate geoscience courses and who are currently incorporating homemade videos in their courses or who will begin to develop these resources as part of this program.

Cost is $200.

Transhumanism, Filmmaking and the Future

Arizona State University411 N Central AvePhoenixArizona85004

Filmmaker Doug Wolens will discuss the making of his documentary, The Singularity, which refers to a point in the future when we create computers with greater-than-human intelligence, bio-engineer our species and re-design matter through nanotechnology. How will these technologies change what it means to be human? In the film, Wolens speaks with leading futurists, computer scientists, artificial intelligence experts, and philosophers who turn over the question like a Rubik’s Cube. Ultimately, if we become more machine-like, and machines more like us, will we sacrifice our humanity to gain something greater? Or will we engineer our own demise? Join Wolens as he contemplates these questions and shares his experience making a documentary about a time somewhat beyond human imagination's current capability. To view a trailer of the film and read an interview with Doug Wolens, see that Atlantic Monthly article, "Pondering Our Cyborg Future in a Documentary About the Singularity."
