Module Description:

This module, from Support Center for Microsystems Education (SCME), provides "an overview of how MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) are being used for bioterrorism and environmental sensing." The module is divided into the following three units: Primary Knowledge (PK) Reading material, Research Activity, and Final Assessment.

Module Contents: 

This module includes three instructor guides, three participant guides, and a presentation. PDF and DOC versions are provided for all of the guides. The included guides are MEMS for Environmental and Bioterrorism Applications Learning Module, an activity, and an assessment. Instructor guides include additional content such as instructor notes and questions and answers.

MEMS for Environmental and Bioterrorism Applications Primary Knowledge (PK) is an instructional unit (located inside the MEMS for Environmental Bioterrorism Applications Learning Module PDF) that includes the following objectives:

  • Discuss at least three ways that MEMS are currently being applied to environmental or bioterrorism sensing.
  • Develop at least two ideas for possible MEMS applications in environmental or bioterrorism sensing.

The following sections are included in this unit guide: Introduction, Objectives, MEMS Sensing, Marine Environment, Tsunami Warning System, The GITEWS, MEMS Ocean Sensors, and more. 

The MEMS Environmental and Bioterrorism Applications Activity should be assigned after the MEMS for Environmental and Bioterrorism Applications Primary Knowledge (PK) unit. In the activity, students "develop a presentation that explains how [their] MEMS works and the advantages it offers to its specific applications."

Assessment MEMS for Environmental and Bioterrorism Applications includes six discussion questions and is intended to be given to students at the completion of the module.

A presentation is also provided and includes a unit overview, objectives, and information on how "MEMS technology is used for environmental and bioterrorism sensing." The presentation is provided in both PDF and PowerPoint formats.

For orientation purposes App_bioMEM_P1_PK60.pdf is included as a separate attachment and offers a sample of the type of material included in this module.
