Energy Choices Games: Economic, Environmental & Security Impacts

This lesson, created by Bruce Karpe, utilizes Chevron's online simulation, Energyville (the objective of which is to provide "enough power to meet the energy demands of a city with a population of 5.9 million people, while keeping them prosperous, secure, and living in a clean environment") to encourage students to think about energy decisions made on a daily basis that will have implications, both foreseeable and unexpected, on the future.

Working in pairs, students will work together and explore Energyville with the ultimate goal of answering two questions: What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources? and What does it mean to be green? Because students may be unfamiliar with some of the vocabulary they come across, they will be encouraged to use the Internet to define terms, with all definitions later compiled by the class for a "word wall."

The ninety-minute lesson requires access to the Internet, and assumes that students know the basics of energy: that energy is provided by both renewable and nonrenewable resources, that fossil fuels are a major type of nonrenewable energy, and that the use of renewable resources such as solar energy and wind is considered advantageous.
