In "Local Oil Spill," students will have the opportunity to design an ideal Emergency Response Plan to an oil spill in a local water body from the Real-Life Applications classroom series created by ATEEC. First, students will choose a local body of water, describe it topographically, estimate how quickly the oil spill will spread, determine who should respond to the spill and how, develop a timeframe for action, and finally create a professional report. This activity is designed to encourage student to build "knowledge and skills about releases of polluting materials into the environment" and "to apply knowledge and skill in the community context" and should take approximately one classroom period to complete.
