An Introduction to Geospatial Intelligence: Why Remote Sensing is Becoming More Important

Jefferson Community and Technical College - Southwest Campus1000 Community College DriveLouisvilleKY40272

This Exploratorium introduces geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) and discusses its technologies, tradecraft, policies, capabilities, doctrines, activities, people, data and communities needed to produce geospatial intelligence in an integrated, multi-intelligence, multi-domain environment. GEOINT was created to describe and encompass both the standard and the advanced (integrated) capabilities of imagery, imagery intelligence and geospatial information. It was originally primarily connected to remote sensing, but now has branched out to other areas as well.  This Exploratorium is for beginners up to intermediate audiences who are either brand new to GEOINT or are just starting out.  It is NOT for the GEOINT guru or advanced user.

Field Data Collection

Jefferson Community and Technical College - Southwest Campus1000 Community College DriveLouisvilleKY40272

This hands on event will utilize both software driven data collection and hand sketching. The participant will learn how to collect data, build data sets, and share to other users. The methods will include using Field Papers, Collector and ArcGIS Online. Participants will need to have a smart device which has a true GPS to fully participate. Esri Collector app should be installed on the smart device prior to attending the Exploratorium. There are app version for both Apple and Android but not Windows. An understanding of maps is required, but no specific software knowledge is required, but very useful. Survey to Validate Profile of the "Data Practitioner"

Recently a national panel of data analysis experts met in Boston to create an occupational profile of the Data Practitioner- an entry level position in data/ big data that can be found in a variety of industries. The development of the profile is part of an ATE project led by Education Development Center (EDC) that will assist four community colleges to develop career pathways aimed at preparing students for data/ big data related careers, including jobs like those described by the panel. The profile identifies the work activities, skills, knowledge and behaviors expected of proficient Data Practitioners. EDC is looking for individuals experienced in the work of data analysis and reporting, who can review and comment on the profile by taking a 30 minute online survey found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DataPractitioner. Reviewers comments will help finalize the profile which will be used by community college faculty as a resource for designing curricula and courses.
