Students will also discover how science, technology, and engineering come together to help solve problems; explore different fields of biotechnology and its applications in everyday life; review basic biology and engineering principles; create an artificial source of insulin; work as a team to design, build, test, and evaluate a bioreactor; and use technology to solve problems. The course is divided into eleven sections:

  • Section 1: Introduction
  • Section 2: The Design Process
  • Section 3: What is Biotechnology?
  • Section 4: Biology Review
  • Section 5: Biomanufacturing: The Story of Insulin
  • Section 6: The Effects of Insulin
  • Section 7: Biomanufacturing
  • Section 8: Protein Purification
  • Section 9: Designer DNA: Solving the Insulin Problem
  • Section 10: Bioreactor Training
  • Section 11: Product Redesign and Maximizing Product Production.
